While I Was Walking...

Monday, March 19

During my lunch breaks at work I walk a treadmill and watch DVD's, 30 minutes at a time. In this column I review them and finish things off with my thoughts with whether or not I recommend the movie.

Alright, I'm gonna do two of these for a while. If I don't, then I'll never actually catch up to where I am now on my list. Still going in order: Drop Dead Sexy.

I watched this just cause a friend of mine did. It stars Jason Lee and I like Jason Lee. Figured why not. Wow, what a great way to kill time.

Here's the official plot outline: "When their money scam runs aground, a group of would-be thieves turn to kidnapping in an attempt to blackmail their target."

The film has a dark sense of humor, giving a few laughs, if you can get past the weirdness of the plot content. There's a few times when you wonder if it'll cross the line. The film involves "mob" like situations, meaning, you've probably seen this plot once before somewhere either on TV or the movies. Certainly a lot of twists... but you see them coming.

I thought I'd see a really weird Crispin Glover, cause let's face it... that's where he lives now. Dispite the fact his character IS weird, his performance was rather "calmed down" that I was expecting. Both he and Jason Lee did good jobs with thier characters.

HOWEVER, I can not say that'd I'd recommend this film. I only finished it, just to have finished it.

Not recommended.

Next up is Underworld. I've never seen this nor it's sequel and once more, because somebody else liked it, I decided to give it a shot.

I enjoyed it. It probably would have been better if it wasn't trying so hard to be a summer blockbuster and trying to imatate the Matrix films. Although, to be fair, a lot of movies have tried to be like the Matrix films after the first one was released.

However, the plot: Selene (Beckinsale), a beautiful vampire warrior, is entrenched in a war between the vampire and werewolf races. Although she is aligned with the vampires, she falls in love with Michael (Speedman), a werewolf who longs for the war to end.

And boy, does she screw herself in the end. I had never really wanted to watch Underworld before, but after seeing the possition that Kate Beckinsale put herself in at the end, I'm going to give the second one a chance now.

Mildly Recommended.
