Superman Shirt Month - Day 21

Sunday, September 30

Here I am in my only long sleeved Superman shirt. I love how the flames continue on the sleeves. The last shirt on the final day of Superman Shirt Month.
Wow, wasn't this a fun way for me to kill both time and space. Maybe I'll find something themed for the next up-coming months... but until then... courage!

Hey, how's it going?

Thursday, September 27

Got an e-mail from a regular visitor to the site, my longtime friend and favorite boss ever, Shelly Gibson.
She usually doesn't chime in too often, but it was good to hear from her. Hopefully she'll have more to say in her next e-mail. I just thought if anybody wanted to say hey to her, feel free to drop a line on the message board.

A Draw Me In Moment

Behold my first two appearances, pages two of both Invincible #37 and The Walking Dead #35. I recently had these bad boys framed and here I am holding the end result of it, conveniently pointing to both my cameos.
It's moments like holding this that makes it ALL worth it.

Superman Trial

Jeff Trexler summarizes the latest developments in the Siegel family lawsuits against Warner Bros. and DC Comics over the rights to Superman and Superboy.

Those mostly take the form of motions from plaintiffs and defendants, and “additional memoranda in support of their positions,” including declarations of support for the Siegels from Mark Evanier and Jim Steranko. It was also revealed that Superman Returns director Bryan Singer will be deposed by Nov. 30.

The Superman trial is scheduled to begin on Jan. 22, 2008.

A Startling Revalation

Saturday, September 22

I just got done watching a special feature on the recent DVD release Superman/Doomsday, which talks about how the Death of Superman came to be in comics. I found out an interesting bit of info. But let me break it down first:

This...

Would not be possible if it were not for this...

And this came about because of this...

Yeah. Who would have thought this show on ABC would have been responsible for me collecting comics.

Apparently both the show and the comics had Lois and Clark engaged. The show didn't want the comics to do a wedding first, and in the show, that was a few seasons still to go. So the comic writers had to come up with something else to fill in the gap, replacing their wedding plans.

Enter: The Death of Superman... The reason I even collect comics.

Who'd of thought?

Interesting...

A news bit I grabbed from Newsarama:

Warner Bros. has confirmed that George Miller will direct the big-screen adaptation of Justice League of America.

Variety reports the movie is a priority for the studio, which is rushing the project into production before a potential talent strike effectively shuts down Hollywood next summer. To make matters more complicated, Warner Bros. has to juggle its other superhero projects.

According to the trade paper, the next installment of the Superman franchise “has taken a backseat to Justice League in part because Warners is so keen on the Justice League script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney.” That would seem to answer the question that’s been dogging the planned sequel to last year’s Superman Returns.

Despite earlier rumors that Justice League would be made primarily with motion capture, it looks as if it’ll be a special effects-driven live-action film.

In addition to the Caped Crusader and the Man of Steel, Variety says Justice League likely will feature at least Aquaman, Wonder Woman and The Flash. It’s being viewed as a launch pad for movies starring the latter two.

Miller, who most recently helmed the hit Happy Feet, also directed the Mad Max franchise.

Stuff I'm Reading

Thursday, September 20

Here's a quick rundown of a few comics I'm currently reading that I'm really enjoying right now.

Black Adam: This mini-series is dedicated to a character whom recently killed every living person in a middle eastern country, all to revenge the death of his wife. A guy with Superman like strength, had his powers stripped away, and became the most wanted man on Earth for his crimes. And, you might think he'd have learned a thing or two from his experiences. Nope. Absolute power corupts, as they say... and killing still seems to be his middle name.
This series seems to be controversial across the board, reading other sites talk about it, but I'm actually enjoying it and am very curious to how this is going to play out. What does the future hold for Black Adam?

Ultimate Power: This is a crossover between two different Marvel Universes, one of the Ultimate line and one that features the Squadron Supreme. Although I don't collect any of the Ultimate line, I do love me some Squadron. And while that title seems to be in limbo right now, I'll take what I can get. The Ultimates are almost the Marvel Universe (616 for those who know), so this is actually a good crossover.
And I'll tell you what, while it's winding down, the shit is hitting the fan and I was VERY surprised to the ending of this last issue. I won't spoil it directly, but another Universe's team get's thrown into the mix. This totally changes how this story is going to pay off, the rules have changed!

The Walking Dead: For a book that has been know to ship a week or two late ocassionally, it's surprising to have three issues in two months time. So this book quickly passed through the setup/build up to lead to one massive cliffhanger.
Everything is practically hanging on a "what's gonna happen next" moment!!! The writer has already made his hints that a major player could bite (heh.. zombie book) the dust and that no one is safe. I don't want any of them to die!

Free State FreeCon 2007

Saturday, September 15

There's no better way to start the day than to go to a comic book convention. That was my Saturday where the girlfriend and I traveled to Lawrence for the Free State FreeCon. There were plenty of comic artists and writers there on hand for me to pimp my drawmein campaign. I meet and handed out flyers to Josh Howard, Kevin Mellon, Jason Aaron, Jeremy Haun, and the highlight of the trip... Freddie Williams II.

Freddie was the last person to "draw me in" and had gone above and beyond by giving me both a speaking role and put me in over ten panels in six pages. The two of us talked to him and his wife for quite a long while. Upon seeing me, even before getting to his table, he set aside a copy of the book I was in.... FOR ME TO SIGN! That was awesome! He signed a few copies for me, did a sketch, I bought a pic he did for Rachael, and got a photo taken with him. Freddie Williams II has definetly made this fanboy a fan for life.

One thing I noticed however was this, a lot of these guys are going to have future projects with DC, that they couldn't announce yet. So I'm looking forward to reading about that news.

Below are sketches and pics I got from Saturday. Enjoy!

Here I am with Josh Howard and a cool Supergirl sketch he did.

Thirteen Steps artist Kevin Mellon was cool.

Here I am with writer Jason Aaron. I can't believe how fast he's gained in high profiled projects.

Finally, here I am with Freddie Williams II. Below is a Martian Manhunter sketch and that Superman sketch he did.

Superman Shirt Month - Day 11

I forget the occasion, but this is one of many Superman shirts my girlfriend gave me. It quickly got ruined in the washer though unfortunately (notice the partial missing white on the "S"). It's still a good shirt though, if not for around the house... reading comics.

Hello, and happy Monday. Notice it's Day 9 and today is the 10th? Well, that's cause I missed a day... and for good reason too... cause I'm going to run out of shirts before the month is over.

Here however I present the first (and only thus far) photo submissions (from Day 5) from one of my fellow bloggers (he of King of all Mikes fame). Thanks Mike. P.S. Don't try to smile.

The Defuser Wins Who Wants to be a Superhero?

Courtesy of Comics Continuum:

Austin, Texas police detective Jarrett Crippen was declared the winner of Season 2 of Who Wants to be a Superhero? on SciFi Channel on Thursday night.

Star and judge Stan Lee chose Crippen's alter ego The Defuser in the season finale. The Defuser will be immortalized in his very own comic to be written by Lee and published by Dark Horse Comics, and Shocker Toys will create an action figure of the character. The Defuser will also get to appear in a Sci Fi original movie.

"Most kids grow up reading comic books and dreaming about being a superhero. It's taken 38 years, but I'm living that dream," Crippen said. "I can't express how this experience has changed my life for the better. The only word that comes to mind is... incredible!"

Inspired by Batman and Captain America, Crippen created his character when he was a young boy. The Defuser is a loner and expert at gadgetry and invention. He performs at 110 percent possessing enhanced speed, strength agility, reflexes, hearing and eyesight.

"I congratulate The Defuser on his well-deserved victory," Lee said. "He truly lived up to his superhero powers with his laudable performance throughout the series. He demonstrated all of the characteristics of a true hero and will be a terrific role model for kids."

Summertime Fun Goodness

Over this Labor Day weekend I was invited out to enjoy some summer time fun at a friends house. There were plenty of folks I knew to enjoy some free food, some alcohol, and take a dip in a very warm pool.

I hope everybody had a good weekend. Mine would have been great had I not had to work everyday. Kinda defeats the purpose I guess of Labor Day.
