Planet Comicon 2008

Sunday, April 6

Over the weekend I went to my big local convention Planet Comicon. I decided to approach a few of the guests in attendance with my campaign.

I had meet Kurt Busiek two years ago in San Diego, but this time around I decided to give him a special flier with a letter to Mark Bagley on it. In about a month or so Busiek and Bagley are beginning DC Comics new weekly series Trinity, staring Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. I hope Mark gets that flier!

Because he was doing a lot of sketches, I ended up waiting the longest in David Finch's line. When I did get around to meeting him, he seemed like a very nice guy and even seemed to take to the flier I gave him, very... enthusiastically curious? He really looked over the flier and letter I had put with it for a while and mentioned how he'd never seen anybody really organize something like this. Which is good, I don't need any copy cats out there.

The next three guys are no strangers to Planet Comicon or to me handing them propaganda for that matter. All living close to the Kansas City area and for me giving them all fliers at previous conventions. First up, I approached B. Clay Moore whom surprising remembered me and mentioned he still had my last flier. Hearing this is often encouraging. I ended up buying the first three issues of Hawaiian Dick for him to sign, and hopefully one day I'll be seeing myself in those pages.

Right next to his table was Jason Aaron, writer of Scalped, Ghost Rider, and Wolverine. He too remembered me and I handed him a few fliers to give out to an artist or two he works with. He was very nice to meet again, I bought one of his Wolverine issues to sign, and moved on to my last target for the convention; Phil Hester.

Here's a guy whom I wasn't too sure about in the past. The first time I ever approached him with a flier he referred to me as "that guy from the message boards" and dismissed the idea. Of course I wasn't "that guy" and figured Phil would be out of the picture. However, I'm glad I tend to follow up on these things. I e-mailed him one day and not only did he remember me AND still had my flier, he mistook me for someone else and now seemed keen to the campaign. I handed him a flier this year with a note that read, "Here's another one for the collection. I'll wear you down eventually". He's a cool guy. And by the way Phil, I still couldn't find an issue of Ant-Man #10 anywhere. Maybe next year.
I also managed to pick up tons of single issues that I had been missing. However there were two that I couldn't find that pissed me off, but I'll find them eventually. No sketches this year, which seemed odd. Good times!
