The Store - Setting Up Shop

Click on the pictures above for larger versions. Pictured from top to bottom; Store owner Jeff, some security guy, the back of the store, the cool kick ass racks, Jeff again hiding, and Mike.

Last night I went over to the store (Limited Figures and Comics) to see how things were shaping up. To my surprise, Sunday's massive stacks of boxes almost looked like a store now. A really nice store. Really.

Many of my friends including the store's manager and it's owner were there, setting out merchandise and fixtures. They've really come together to make the store look it's best come opening day, tomorrow.

For extra bragging rights, it turns out that after buying something last night I have become the stores' first sale. Whoo hoo for me.

New Media Tuesday

Walk the Line, in my own opinion, was probably the best movie of 2005. Sorry Batman Begins. This film was such a great biopic. It had two ingredients that I love in movies; a. it was a time piece and b. featured a lot of music that I enjoyed. Great performances all around, I hope when the Oscar's hit in March that both best actor awards (male/female) go to Phoenix and Whitherspoon (respectively).

Pretty much everything else that comes out today I really haven't seen or don't know too much about. Pride & Prejudice is a movie my girlfriend wanted to see in the theatres, so I'll probably end up seeing this one. To be honest, it doesn't look all too bad. The Ice Harvest has all the right actors for something horribly funny.

Where the Truth Lies, I have no clue what this is about. Yours, Mine and Ours looks like another Cheaper by the Dozen, but worse. Disney releases another animated classic, Lady and the Tramp. Yeah, it was great when I was a kid. Not so interested in it now.

And as far as boxed sets go, Charmed Season 4 and Newsradio Season 3 come out. I never watched any of these shows, although I've heard Newsradio was funny. Eh.

Diet - Week 9

My weight is on a slow downward spiral. And that's good. It's just takes too damned long.

This morning I weighed in at 226lbs. Another pound lost from last week.

Yippie.

You know how frickin long it's going to take at this rate to get to that 200 mark? Probably close to Thanksgiving. Ugh. Course there's nobody to blame but myself. I either have to change my eating habits or just suck up to the fact that I'll be posting these things for many weeks to come.

Comic Book Run

Sunday, February 26

On Thursday night I went on a comic run. One of the last I'll be doing as frequently as I have been. I've been going to Kwality Comics in Lawrence for quite some time now, and having to tell them I'm taking my business elsewhere is like breaking up. It's hard to do.

I'm uncertain just how up to par this new store is going to be starting out, after all, he's new to it. So I'll give it time, and so I'm sure I'll be going to Kwality Comics again in the future, if anything else then to just say hey. After all, the people there were cool to me.

But for now, let's get to the comics, what do we have here? Um, I see my DC Comic stash kind of surrounded. Yep, it's bookended by both Marvel and Image, how can this be?

On the left we have some Marvel books. A Giant-Sized one-shot of Ms. Marvel. Damn, I should have flipped through this before actually buying. This was one impulse buy I regret. Uncany X-Men, wasn't bad... wasn't great. I may pick up the next issue. Just for the hell of it. The New Avengers was almost made up of splash pages. At least 8 or 9 pages worth, starting up an "epic" storyline. Last, we have the Iron Spidey issue. I bought this just to have it. I don't know if I'll continue this arc or not.

Most of the DC Comics wrapped up storylines, getting ready for a universal jump "One Year Later". All the books in the DCU line are jumping OYL due to the mega crossover events of Infinite Crisis. Hope things work out for that. Wait and see is all I can do. Batgirl finished her series out with a last issue. Supergirl was an extra long issue, playing catch up to shipping delays and the up-coming OYL jump. Like Avengers, this too had many splash pages in it.

Last we have The Walking Dead by Image. I've read the first four trades and now have the current issues, so I am totally up to date with The Walking Dead. I've added this title to my monthly rotation. All in all not a bad two weeks worth.

The Store - Moving In

To those whom may not know or live in the Leavenworth area, starting March 1st, a new comic book store is opening in my area.

For many years now Leavenworth has been without a comic book store and I've had to make my comic book trips to Lawrence, a nice forty minutes away. Now it'll be a comfy ten minutes.

It all started when a few friends of mine introduced me to a figure store off of Barry Road. They befriended the owner and after a few trips, so did I. I e-mailed him about starting a store in Leavenworth for comics, and after a few of us reiterating the request, he took to the idea and took one of our suggestions for an empty store in the Leavenworth Plaza. Fast forward a bit, this Wednesday the store opens: Limited Figures and Comics.

It's even going to be employed by a few of my friends, so what's not to like. Over the weekend they moved some stuff in, I stopped in on Sunday to check it out. I can't believe he had that much stuff to fill up the store.

I'll probably post more of this as opening day comes closer.

Score!

So at work, I sometimes go to Yahoo! Launchcast radio, normally I listen to either classic rock or nineties stuff. But I've always wanted to listen to the film scores for a day, and so I did. About an hour into it I hear this song that's always played during the Oscar's, usually during a tribute or something, so I investigate. The song is "The Dragon's Heartbeat" by Randy Edelman from Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. I was blown away, cause I would have never have guessed that in a million years. Now I can't get enough of that song. Or this station on Launchcast. I just heard the Escape From New York theme. Cool.

Justice League Unlimited - All Great Things...

It hasn't happened yet here in the states, but I have seen the end.

There's only been a few episodes aired of this, the last season of Justice League Unlimited, but thanks to the wonders of the internet, I've seen them all.

This season focused in on the creation of the Leigon of Doom. A nice little nod to Superfriends.

A lot of great episodes featuring a lot of the DCU. Great fights. Sigh. I guess it's true, all great things must end. The powers to be did it right though.

Diet - Week 8

Tuesday, February 21

So.... whatever happened to week 7? Good question, I ignored week 7. Am I still on a diet? I question myself that every once and a while. Anyway... it's now almost two months into my diet, and boy is it crappy. About the only thing I've stuck with so far is cutting out soda. I'll admit that drinking water and other assorted fruit beverages is refreshing and does feel a lot healthier. But I just keep eating these big meals, and don't quit when I should. I exercise sparingly anymore, which is more than usual, but not enough to actually help out my cause. *sigh*

This is week eight. I just walked the treadmill for lunch and weighed myself: 227lbs. I lost two pounds, but in two weeks time. Very slow results indeed. Sad.

New Media Tuesday

It's the return of New Media Tuesdays. I found some time here to squeeze one in. And there's a few interesting picks here.

What have we got, let's see... Weather Man staring Nicholas Cage. I wanted to see that in theatres, now's my chance. I hope it doesn't suck, kinda looks like American Beauty where in Cage's life sucks, in a dark way, and then he finds something good that makes him happy, but maybe with a happier ending than "Beauty".

Domino. She's a bounty hunta. Or so she says. Based off of some true story. I guess. To be honest I was excited to see this, and did in the theatres. However I left disappointed, and really don't even care to see it a second time. Then we move on to Rent, the movie based off of the Broadway musical! Moving on.

Comics time! Ultimate Avengers, based off of Marvel's Ultimates, based off of the Avengers. Got it? I'm curious to see how this hardcore kickass comic was adapted to an animated kiddie cartoon. I'm sure they did a good job. I'll be picking up a copy just to find out. Marvel producer Avi Arad has been doing alright with the comic properties, I have faith.

Last but not least, 3rd Rock From the Sun season three is finally out! I marathoned through the first two seasons and was left with a to be continued season finale. What a great way to kill several evenings.

Rapid Reviews

Sunday, February 19

Elizabeth Town * * * * 1/2
If any of Cameron Crowes' movies were ever to come close to being like his 2000 hit Almost Famous, it'd be this one. I really enjoyed this movie. It wasn't as good as "Famous", it lacked a few of the elements from that film that make it so high on my favorites list. However, only just because of those missing elements (a time piece about music), Elizabeth Town manages to capture the same tone and feeling from "Famous".

Corpse Bride * * 1/2
I enjoyed this. I think most people would want to compare it to The Nightmare Before Christmas but you just can't. It's not the same kind of movie.

Lion King * * *
This would be one of those movies I watch while working in the electronics department. It's one of my favorite Disney films. I always get chills with the movies intro song.

Date Movie * * 1/2
I don't see many movies in the theatres anymore. And frankly, the theatre experience just isn't that appealing anymore. You pay too much for a ticket, lucky if you can afford any snacks, deal with "the public", and can't even fast forward through the commercials. Plus, theatre to DVD turnaround is so fast anymore, I can just wait to rent it. But wait! I'm going off on a tangent here, let's talk about Date Movie. I went in looking for movie spoofs and laughs, and that's what I got. So I can't complain, it's just that the movie is supposed to be stupid, that I can't rank it all to high.

Bambi II *
What's this doing on my movie list? I would never purposely watch this. But again, this is one of those movies I had to endure at work, so after having it play in the background over ten times, you tend to pick up on the plot and stuff. It was too damn cute for it's own good. But while it was playing I noticed Patrick Stewart voiced the "Great Prince". I was thrown off by that one.

Kronk's New Groove * * 1/2
Hee hee. One of life's guilty pleasures. I loved The Emperor's New Groove. A lot. I laughed so hard the first time it hurt. This one, not so funny, but as a direct to video sequel, it was done right. It followed the formula to a tee, and this time spotlighted a different lead character, and thankfully had the entire cast return for voices.

The Aristocrats 1/2
Wow. This movie sucked so bad. I thought it was going to have lots of potential. Get a whole crap load of really funny guys and let them joke around about this joke that's kind of an inside thing for comedians. Yeah, it's funny to them. But what a crappy joke, "A man and his family walk into a talent agency and says 'Boy do we have an act for you!', [insert all sorts of wrongness anything from fecal matter to incest], and then a pointless unfunny punchline. Bottom line, I couldn't even finish this. If anything was funny, it was Kevin Pollak's interpretation of the joke as Christopher Walken.

My Big Fat Independent Movie 1/2
Another disappointment. I knew this was going to be a stupid movie spoof movie, but at least I thought it was going to be funny. Instead it went the way of the Wizard of Oz, meaning, it started out following this guy (from Swingers), who meet up with two assassins (Pulp Fiction) who ran into this girl (The Good Girl), who then ran into this guy with memory problems (Memento), all following the path down the yellow brick road. Not literally. But that's how this movie went. And again, not funny at all. Just pointless. What a shame.

Taken * * 1/2
This is actually an HBO/Dreamworks series done by Steven Spielberg in 2000. It starts off with the Roswell incident back in the 50's, and follows different people throughout different generations up to today, all dealing with problems that came with a crashed alien ship and the occasional abduction. I started to enjoy this series, especially in the beginning in the 50's going through the 70's but as it got closer to today and it's eventual ending, it got boring fast. All this and each episode was an hour and a thirty minutes long. That's a lot of television to endure.

From Russia With Love *
I only wanted to watch this because the video game was so kick ass. And the game still is, only the movie it's based on, sucks ass. They added a lot of content to the game and to its storyline, cause the movie just wasn't that interesting at all. I guess I'm just not into the older James Bond movies or something.

Nutty or Nice?

I drive a Jeep. As I have learned, there's this rule of the road that if you pass another Jeep, you wave at the occupants. I've seen other people wave at other people driving the same vehicle as them. This seems normal. Also, people wave at other people that they know. Also normal.

Let me tell you what I saw today while driving.

I was leaving Fort Leavenworth following this car with tons of U.S. flag stickers in the rear window, and a vet license plate. This guy rolls down his window and shows the peace sign with his hand towards the guards at the gate. Heh. Cute.

Then we get to the road. He then gives the peace sign to every car we pass. Alright. Many miles of road later, he has given the peace sign to every car passing either by him or infront of him. Sometimes keeping his hand up just waiting for the next car to pass. What the hell?

I'm a Dead Head

Sunday, February 12

And I don't mean the Grateful Dead either.

I've always been interested but not to the point of actually reading it, I'm talking about Robert Kirkman's: The Walking Dead. Yes. Thanks to a friend loaning me the first three trade paperbacks of the series, I've become addicted to it. It truly is a zombie movie, that keeps on going.

Comic Book Run

Wednesday night I had an errand to run that brought me close to Lawrence, so I decided to pick up my comic books in the same trip.

Not bad stuff. I like the direction DC is starting to take. It's starting to get to the point where minor characters are getting spotlights and every issue something "major" happens.

Starting to take longer for me to read all of these, and I just keep adding to the collection.

Diet - Week 6

Wednesday, February 8

Hey true believers!

What a week this has been. We had the Superbowl to deal with. I went out to eat with friends and family. Guess what? I gained two pounds. Yeah. That sucks ass.

I kinda knew this was going to be a bad week with all of the excessive dining.

I'm in it for the long run, so however long it takes. Hopefully I'll start getting better results. So far it's just slow and steady.

This week was just a minor bump in the road.

Superbowl Hurrah

So I had a few friends and family over last night to watch the Superbowl. What a boring ass game. I didn't really care about any team. I ended up cheering for the underdog the Seahawks and guess what, they lost. So the game was a bust. How about the commercials? Nothing great. I think Budweiser had the best ones. Nothing else sticks out. How lame.

Birthday Celebration

Saturday night my girlfriend and I journeyed into Kansas City to meet up with a few of my high school buds to celebrate one one of my good friends birthday: Francis.

All of us gathered with his friends from KC to go to the Plaza to a resturant called Sharps. Nice food at that place. Afterwards we went to a club called Missie B's, this being the second year in a row that we've done the same thing for his birthday. I was glad to be there for him, as he told me the same. It was really great spending time with the old Tonganoxie crew. They are really good to me and I miss them. I hate the fact that we don't see each other more often.

Happy Birthday Francis. I love ya man.
