A Surprise Around Every Corner

Tuesday, August 29

Let me tell you about one of my favorite movies. A childhood favorite of mine called The Wizard staring child actor extrodinare Fred Savage. Most of my friends know that I have an unhealthy obsession with this film. Yeah, I like it that much.

During the age of VHS, I have owned two copies.... one extra... "just in case". When I decided DVD was my video format of choice however, The Wizard was nowhere to be seen.

I had visited sites online where people had made petitions for it to be released on DVD. I eventually purchased a bootleg copy of it off of Ebay that was either ripped from a Laserdisc or VHS copy, without any fancy extras.

But today... OH today, I stop by Wal*Mart, and as always... made way to the electronics department. I pass by several new releases including The Tick vs. Season One (thought about buying it) until I did a double take and found an official release of The Wizard on DVD.

"Holy Shit!", I thought to myself. I looked it over, it was only $10.00, no real surprise. No special features, no shocker there... but here's something I didn't even think about... it was widescreen! I've never seen this before in widescreen! Yes, even that little detail made me happy for a lack of any kind of special feature. Even trailers.

Yeah, I bought it. In case you were wondering.

So keep your powergloves to yourself pal.

About Not Posting Too Much

Hi. Can I talk to you for a minute?

Good.

How's life?

Well I've been busy lately, and it's not been because of work. Surprise. I've actually been hanging out with friends lately, doing a lot of stuff with them and my girlfriend, and it's been very enjoyable. I just haven't had time to blog that stuff on a regular basis and I just wanted to take this little moment to acknowledge it.

Also, while I don't really post too much news worthy stuff, and most people who come here already know this info, I just wanted to report that Limited Figures and Comics located downtown Leavenworth KS is going to be closing. Sad I know. It's last day open is September 9th. I suppose I will travel to it's original store location off of Barry Rd, a mere 35 minutes or so away.

I've lost another hang out with friends.

Fleas.... Bite pt II

Sunday, August 27

So last thursday Rachael and I took my cat to the vet to pay money for two quick shots and some flea stuff. But I love my cat so I guess it wasn't so bad. It just gets expensive.

While we were away with the cat I bug bombed the house. It was supposed to be for fleas but getting rid of any "extra" critters is always a plus.

After waiting for the all clear, and waiting to air out the house before going back in, the house got a major cleaning. It's so nice having so much space... it's just a shame the crap I moved out is coming back. Whats that? Yeah, I'm not moving at this moment in time. The house is no longer for sale... YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE! But anyway... just kind of FYI.

Comic Book Wednesday

At this point in posting I've already bagged my comics, so no pic spread of my collection this week, but above is Justice League of America #1 by Ed Benes.

Birds of Prey #97... wow, 97 issues. I didn't even really realize it was that close. They better do something to make things interesting. Cause this issue wasn't.

New Avengers #23, continuing it's run of focusing on different team members during civil war. This issue focuses on Spider-Woman, and I enjoyed what's happening here.

Supergirl #9. Hey, this book is good again. Kind of a day in the life of issue, focusing on a "date" of sorts with... Captain Boomerang? Yeah, she's jailbait, and it's mentioned... that's why I don't think it was a serious date, however I enjoyed the conversations between the two. Also a little scene where Supergirl visits Batman to sell off a piece of Kryptonian technology so she can have enough money to basicly not have to ever worry about paying rent for the rest of her life. I enjoyed it because in it Bruce truely acts like an uncle to her. Kinda nice.

Astonishing X-Men #16. Well, it's official... I like this title. This issue was a really quick read, but a good one. Mostly focusing in on Kitty Pride. Had a nice little "through the wall" punch moment. Good talent on this book.

Catwoman #58: A never ending storyline. Ever since the One Year Later jump, it's been this one, damned storyline. It was good at first, now... I want it over. The one thing to come from this issue was a tease to whom the baby's daddy is.

52 #16: A crossover of characters finds Renee and the Question present at Black Adam and Isis' wedding. I know that this series is all leading up to something, but even when the "whole picture" isn't really clear at this point, I'm still loving a weekly DC series.

Blue Beetle #6: I'm sticking around for just a little bit longer. That's all I have to say.

Flash #3: Ditto.

Batman #656: Holy Ninja Man-Bats Batman! Yeah, um... that's an interesting concept. Although I never really liked the Man-Bat. I think Morrison has just been sitting on that idea for a while and finally found a place to put it in a comic. However the big shocker ending? Batman has a son. Cool. Do it. Move these characters along damn it. At least it happened first in a comic book than some summer blockbuster film.... grrr... I better not start on this one... you're a marked man Brian Singer!!!!

Wonder Woman #2.... HEY! It came out! It was better than the first issue at least. I wonder if this will start making monthly status anytime soon.

Lastly the return of the Justice League. Just so ya'll know, here's the line up: Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Black Lighting, Vixen, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Arsenal, Black Canary, and Red Tornado. A nice mix n' match from previous incarnations plus... Arsenal. I don't think people really saw that one coming. But I like that he graduated to JLA status. Move characters a long.

It's kind of like Flash vs. the Riddler and Batman vs. Lex Luthor. Character interactions that are out of their environment so to speak. I enjoy those.

Fleas.... Bite

Tuesday, August 22

Last weekend I noticed my cat Puddy had fleas. My girlfriend had suggested it was probably due to a dog sitting stint we did earlier in the month. Well, last weekend we bought some anti-flea products and attacked the cat.

As of today it didn't really seem to do too much, so now we are going to have to take it to the next level.

Comic Book Wednesday

Thursday, August 17

Actually got to this one before the weekend. Sweet!

Whatever edge Robin had after its One Year Later stint has just lost it. True however that I very much enjoyed the team up of Capt. Boomerang with the Boy Wonder, it's just that nothing of worth is happening anymore.

Ion is now starting to read like they Kyle Rayner stories I've enjoyed in the past. Plus it has Hal Jordan in it, but it's NOT the Hal Jordan show. Me likey.

Alright, 52, Spolier Warning: .... Guess what? Booster Gold died! Don't know who that is? Well, guess you just had to be there.

The Boys: Well, this one isn't exactly mine, at least I wasn't going to buy it until my girlfriend kinda grabbed it and put it on my stash this week. You can tell that it's written by Garth Ennis, that guy who did Punisher and other comics with really violent wrong things in them. After reading it, I wasn't like, "Damn, I gotta keep reading this!"... so I'll have to make sure the girlfriend doesn't come with me to the store in a month. Heh. I did get a free autographed poster out of the deal... which I will treasure for the rest of my life. Or something like that.

Civil War: X-Men: So where's the conflict in this one? Oh, some corrupt government guy with a grudge against mutants, USING a mutant to defeat a group of... mutants. Didn't.... didn't I see this in a movie before? With a ... ah ... bunch of mutants? *cough* X2? *cough*

And finally, my late arrival... a comic that was actually delivered to my door step... now THAT'S service. Thanks Greg. So The Walking Dead #30... how was it? Well it finally touched upon some characters that haven't been seen for a while due to a climatic last few issues worth of story. So it was nice to see they were still around at least. I'd be curious to see how this arc finally pays off.

Comics kick ass... see ya later.

Worlds of Fun Wednesday

So the girlfriend and I had these free passes for Worlds of Fun (courtesy of my Stepmom) and were planning to go there on Thursday. Well, due to impending, inclinated weather, we decided to skip out the better part of a work day and go on Wednesday.

Not a bad way to finish a day of work. Not bad weather either.

To the left are pictures of the parks' newest addition called The Patriot. Finally a rollercoaster to replace the Orient Express that has both loops and corkscrew turns... plus the damned thing is inverted. Hell yeah, this was fun.

Just as we had planned it, there weren't many people in attendance because most kids were already back in school. There were not lines, and getting back on a ride after having rode it was a common occurrence.

We both had a lot of fun for minimal funds, which is just how I like it.

After getting back home from the park, and a short nap, I decided to put in Final Destination 3. For those of you who don't know, the beginning of the film starts out with a rollercoaster accident gone wrong, and by wrong I mean... people DIE! That kind of put the fear in the ol' girlfriend. Good thing I didn't decide to watch this earlier. BTW: FD3 wasn't that bad of a movie, it's like the game Mouse Trap, but for killing people. Dare I say it was the best of the trilogy? I Dare.

Comic Book Wednesday

Tuesday, August 15

Well, better late than never.

I've been reading a lot of extra Trade Paperbacks from a few friends and that too has taken up a lot of my "comic book" time. Anywho... the rundown.

The new creative team on Superman caught my eye with the first issue, and I liked it. This issue however dropped several points. In fact by half. The only points of interest here are bits including Lana Lang and a surprise appearance by Aquaman's daddy Arion. Yeah, I didn't see that one coming either.

Secret Six just isn't interesting. I'm buying it cause I'm a consumer whore.

Finally, it looks like this one will get it right, a solid start for a series starring the Martian Manhunter... oh but wait, it's a limited series... it ends at issue 8. Well fuck.

Green Arrow, getting good. Looking forward to the setups, Winick surprises.

Eh, 52.

Squadron Supreme, I like this book. I do.

Wait, what the hell is this doing in my collection? It looks like the last three issues of Astonishing X-Men. So, um... yeah, I like this book. Really good. And it's a lot better than say... at least two of the now four X-Men titles I collect... possibly even than dare I say...

New X-Men, damn, I like these kids... and nobody has really fought anyone since I've started this about six issues ago. Yeah, there has been conflict, but nothing in yo' face about it. That'll change in next months issue. Heh.

I laughed at this one the hardest. It's just so true. Check these out, some are really funny, others I'm sure real fans of the original series will enjoy (and/or understand).

Reality Sucks

Wednesday, August 9

Let's talk television. Namely, stuff I've seen recently.

All of this is my girlfriend's fault by the way.

So, a couple of nights ago I end up sitting on the couch and my girlfriend is watching VH1. Not like it was planned but on came the first episode of Celebrity Fit Club season something. On it are a bunch of C-list... maybe even D-list players of Hollywood wanting to be spotlighted again, such as Big Pussy of the Soprano's and the young daughter of The Fact's of Life, um... what's her face. Anyway, I actually end up watching it. I... Don't... Know... Why.

Afterwords is another season premiere of another reality show featuring Flavor Flav. This show is a trainwreck. It's like the Dating Game meets Jerry Springer. And in theory, there should not have even been a second season to this show... but it was like an extra long season premiere, and I watched the whole damned thing.

Then the other night, I come home from work, and my girlfriend is watching Who Wants to Be a Superhero? on SciFi. This show is about half past retarded. I plead to you, don't watch it. Infact, this show makes comic book fan boys look like nerds. Retarded nerds. Or something to that effect.

Listen, Stan Lee! I know you will never read this, but I'm ashamed of you. Yes, you created like half of Marvel, that's pretty cool. But give back the money you got from the SciFi channel and cut your losses.

Oh, and something else that I've been doing a lot of lately... I've been watching HGTV... that's ah... Home and Garden for the rest of you. Ever since I've been in this "moving" phase of homeownership, I've been enjoying looking at other people's houses and thinking to myself, how many of these cool ideas I could steal and emulate into my house.

That's it for now. Keep watching the boob tube.

What Could Be…

Much discussion has been raised concerning the recent announcement that Heath Ledger will play The Joker in the sequel to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight.

While reading one of my comic book sites, I found this.

Aquaman For the Masses

Well, what the hell happened huh?

Why is Aquaman popular all of a sudden?

First off, a cable show on HBO called entourage has an actor (playing an actor) landing the role of Aquaman in the characters own movie (self titled). In this fictional world we have James Cameron directing it and it makes something like a bajillion dollars box office.

In the real world we see Variety mag publish a fake add for the Aquaman movie complete with it's box office take. The world takes notice.

Second, after a pilot episode is made for a show based off of Aquaman called Mercy Reef, the network (made up of combining networks UPN & WB) decides it doesn't have a time slot for the show basicly and doesn't order any episodes.

Then, oh then, the pilot is made available on something called itunes. Something that's popular with the kiddies I guess, goes along with those digital portable thingies... isomething's. Yeah, for like a week or more it's the most popular download available. Even I don't know how that happened. Isn't porn on this too?

Whatever. The new CW network must be gearing up for Mercy Reef by now. What a great substitute for when Smallville ends (whenever that happens). Was this their plan after all? Build up Aquaman, make him popular? It's a nice wish, highly doubtful though.

And yes, I did download this bad mother and watched it. It was nice to see some nice star power in this show such as Ving Rhames and Lou Diamond Phillips. It was done nicely. I would have watched this show... yeah, big surprise, but it was done nicely. Unlike that piece of crap Birds of Prey.

And even though he won't be Aquaman this year, the would be Arthur Curry himself Justin Hartley will be appearing on Smallville this season as Oliver Queen, a.k.a. Green Arrow.

What a good time to be an Aquaman fan. Now let's all pretend that the cartoon Super Friends never existed shall we.

Comic Book Wednesday - Comic Book Dump

Saturday, August 5

Hello,

I do suppose it's been a while since I've done one of these, actually.. right before I left for SDCC. Since then I've accumulated quite a few comics so here is three weeks worth of Comic Book Wednesday.

52 #11 - Intro Batwoman. She's gay. Ok, fine, whatever.

52 #12 - Intro Isis, another member of the Shazam family. Interesting.

52 #13 - Dude, they just resurrected a scarecrow lookalike of Elongated Man's dead wife, and it was creepy.

Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis #43 - I miss my old Aquaman.

Batman #655 - Another new writer for Batman, and so I give it a shot, but only because it's Grant Morrison.

Birds of Prey #96 - FINALLY someone acknolegdes the fact that Ted Kord (the Blue Beetle) is dead, and it's a sad thing. It only took a frickin year for someone to write it.

Blue Beetle #5 - Alright, it's starting to loose my interest. Best be doing something worth while soon.

Catwoman #57 - Not as strong as previous issues.

Civil War #3 - All I have to say is "Yes!". Some fightin' goes down and the last page has one saying "WTF?"

Flash: The Fastest Man Alive #2 - Ok, so now Bart Allen is the Flash. What the hell? Can we please have some explanation cause the longer this goes on the longer I'm going to be pissed about it.

Invincible #34 - Sweet.

Ion #4 - I'm glad I kept getting this, cause the revelation at the end was a nice one. Kick ass, and thank god.

New Avengers #22 - A nice look at Luke Cage and his stance with the events in Civil War. I'm with Captain America.

New X-Men #28 - This issue flies by quickly as the Xavier school get visited by Ms. Marvel and Iron Man (Civil War stuff). A nice moment arrives with Emma Frost explaining the X-Men's side of things, remaining neutral.

Outsiders #39 - Even though I'm not enjoying this long played out story that's really not going anywhere, this issue has some hints towards a few characters and some "One Year Later" happenings. Which is nice.

Robin #152 - A long over due meeting with Captain Boomerang since the events of Identity Crisis. But we'll have to wait longer for Robin #153 for anything of worth value to occur.

Supergirl #8 - Hey, I'm happy another issue is out, but let's end this arc.

Superman/Batman #28 - Everything in this book is just crazy talk.

Uncanny X-Men #476 & #477 - Everything I learned so far about the Shi'ar Empire is from that Fox cartoon of X-Men, so I'm banking that everything from the show is correct, but so far enjoying the arc.

X-Men #189 - One of my newer titles. It's alright. Still early.

I've Got a Bad Filling About This

Wednesday, August 2

Two weeks ago to the day I was in San Diego. My first day of vacation. That evening I was in the shower and with a quick swig of water I had discovered a foriegn object in my mouth... don't get too ahead of me people it was only a filling.

Yes, I fucking lost a filling on vacation, which sucked. But not as much as today, cause I went to the dentist to get it replaced.

Man... I hate going to the dentist.

They're like... evil and stuff. He went all crazy with the damn neddle, stabbing my mouth several times, "just to be sure". Which is great and all, can't be too carefull I guess when you're CHIPPING AWAY BITS OF BONE IN MY MOUTH. *Shutter*

So, um... yeah.

Hot! Too Hot...

Tuesday, August 1

Well, last night I had problems with Mr. Air Conditioner.

Yeah, about 5pm I guess my air conditioner wasn't working up to par, that is that it was kinda blowing air, not warm air, but not really cold air. And so last night was a warm sleeping experience to say the least.

Hot! Too hot!

So I'm at home right now when I should be at work, waiting for the good/bad news from the repair guy. More news as it comes.

Keep cool.
