Wednesday Night Trip to Lawrence

Last night I made my monthly trek to Lawrence to grab my stash of comic book goodies. So basicly I purchased half of what DC Comics publishes and my lone Image book (Invincible). Soon to be one Marvel book (Sentinel). Like last time, my girlfriend and I ended up spending the whole evening in the town, eating, shopping, and catching a movie. That movie being the Devil's Rejects.

Now, I've not seen Rob's Zombies' earlier effort 'House of a 1,000 Corpses', which I'm told is way different than 'Rejects'. And to some degree I'm glad I hadn't. Because if these two movies are totally different from one another then I'd say I saw the better of the two without seeing 'House'.

I loved the music. They played whole songs. I wish life had a soundtrack, I really do. A lot of the violence was kind of edgy, but worked. I'm not one for horror or thriller flicks, but I enjoyed this. Kept getting this Chainsaw Massacre (2004) feel. The southern backwater hick feel. Another comment below: *Beware Spoiler* Highlight space.

At the end I'm glad that Sheriff Wydell really gave it back to the bad guys. I thought it was pretty damn eye for an eye kinda stuff. I thought that it was the end for the title characters. And then I was also happy that the good guy died. Not too many movies feature the bad guy winning much anymore. Furthermore, the last scene where the police finally catchup to our band of evildoers, the song, the slow motion, and the many bullet wounds... beautiful. I'm glad to have seen it. Kind of twisted though. Eh.

End Spoiler.

A.C. to Guest-Star on Smallville

Saturday, July 23

Arthur Curry that is. That's right people! Aquaman to guest-star on Smallville. On it's four show of the fifth season. Make sure to set the TIVO! Apparently A.C. is Lex's new swim coach and also hits on Lois.

I'm a fan of the comics and the show, but they seriously need to kick in into gear and start to wrap things up before the new Superman movie hits next year.
Also that guy who played Spike on Angel will be taking up the role of Braniac on future episodes.

Double Feature

Yesterday when I got off work, my girlfriend and I went home to change and prepare for a long evening of movie watching.

First we drove off to the Nebraska Furniture Mart to pick up a copy of Consantine on DVD for only $11.99. Good deal. After that we ate at Arby's. A little 5 for $5 action there. Great food. Then it was on to the Great Plains (Dirt) Mall in Olathe. At the Dickinson 16 we watched Wedding Crashers and then Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Wedding Crashers was funny at times, and wasn't all that bad. Between the two of us I knew she liked it better than I did. Next was the remake of Willy Wonka. If you can call it a remake. I guess it was like they took what they felt was the best from the old 70's film and stuff they left out from the book and throw in tons of crazy Tim Burton fun, and BAM! New movie with tons of CGI. It wasn't bad... nor was it really good. At least I can say I saw it, and Depp was enjoyable as the crazy chcolateer. I didn't even once compare him to Gene Wilder. Whom still owns that character. So Depp did it justice I guess.

Out of a possible five stars....

Wedding Crashers: "* * * 1/2"
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: "* * *"

Come Buy Our Cars Please!

Sunday, July 17

Just an observation. I believe it was GM, about a month ago or so who announced they were going to lay off a large percentage of their employees for some financial reason. Almost the same day, obviously in an effort to look good for themselves, they announce a marketing deal to where they are selling their cars for the employee discount. Yeah, ok... whatever. But now I'm noticing that every other car dealership is following in suit with their own employee discount deal. So now I'm thinking "Hey. Does this mean you're laying off employees too?" I'm going back to being a sheep now. Later.

What's a "Nubian"?

At the San Diego Comic-con this weekend, they unvieled the latest in the line of Clerks In-Action Figures. This time: Chasing Amy. We get Alyssa, Holden, Banky, Hooper, and the tracer "collector" guy played by Scott Mosier. Looks like I'm going to have to clear some wall space soon. God I love these things.

Only somebody like Wonder Woman could have his child

Ocassionally I read the message boards on the DC Comics site. I came across this little bit of info that I found quite funny while in my head, imagining Bruce Brodie saying something like this.

American Idol Sux

Tuesday, July 12

Rockstar Rocks.

I'll admit. I haven't bought into this reality show hype, and these shows that vote people off every episode. Last night I watched a new show on CBS called Rockstar: INXS. The show brings 15 of the "best undiscovered talents" from around the world to compete to be the new lead singer of the rock band INXS. This is way better than American Idol ever was. These contestants actually rock out. And the only person that really sucked on the first episode was voted off already. My favorite from the first show was this guy on the left: Ty Taylor. He performed "Cult of Personality" by Living Colour. Nailed it. This guy has done professional gigs before, so he's pretty comfortable performing. Some guy did a Nirvana song, and murdered it. Kurt was turning in his grave. The chick that got the boot killed "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" by Dylan. That song has been redone out the ass by too many artists to count. She should have left it alone.

I'm currently watching tonight's episode. I think I may vote online after it's over. I'm only halfway through and this one chick Jordis. She has a Pink kind of appearance and voice but rocks to the likes of Anthrax and Damageplan. She tried a Nirvana song and made it her own.

I usually don't make a habit of watching anything prime-time on purpose (with the exception of a good Smallville episode here and there). Last night was an accident. Tonight is on purpose. I think I'll see how this one rides out.

Ka-CHING!

Sunday, July 10

Haven't been able to use my debt card in the last few days. Kinda sucks cause now I know how much I actually relied on it from day to day. Why you ask? Well, after calling my back to ask why people wouldn't take my money (cause, I wasn't warned about this or anything), it comes to be that my bank is taking precautions to what happened like three weeks ago. Something along the lines of a few million mastercard numbers had been compromised from some database somewhere I don't know, so now, my card doesn't work... and I'll be getting a new one as soon as possible. I still don't have one by the way. And so for today at work, I proceed to check out with my checkbook, and it's declined too. What the heck?!? So now my checks don't work either? This may just be an isolated incident, but.. you know... sucks. And I hope this doesn't hurt me like with credit or anything. But I have money to give and nobody wants it. So my bank is getting a little phone call in the morning.

Appleseed

Tuesday, July 5

Over the weekend I watched a movie a friend wanted me to see. It was an anime film called "Appleseed". I haven't really watched too many anime films. I can appreciate the artwork and more adult themes, but for the most part they seem to repeat themselves in just a few categories such as "ninja film", "fantasy film", and "screwed up future film". This one falls into the "screwed up future film", where at the beginning it had a "Matrix" meets "Terminator" feel.

I don't always give anime films their due credit, mostly I just avoid them. I give credit to the more famous anime's that have become cult classics such as Ninja Scoll, Ghost in the Shell, and Akira. The thing I can appreciate most is the artwork. I've seen some animated movies take their hand at CGI into their films and it just never looks right. Everything CGI looks out of place with the rest of the animation. "Appleseed" is almost the reverse of that. Most of the movie is CGI and even the characters appear cell-shaded. It was like watching a new kind of animated film, something I'd never seen before. So visually it had me hooked for a while. Eventually the story caught up with me though. It wasn't a terrible film... it just wasn't my thing. I'd seen this movie before, the last time I watched a "screwed up future" anime.

"Appleseed" tells the tale of Utopia, a world in which 50% of the population is made up from Bioriods (man made humans). These Bioriods are restrained on emotions and are seen as the ideal solution to balance the human thirst for war and thus maintain the peace. Enter, human Deunan Knute, a SWAT trained, lean, mean, killing machine who has been plucked from the war zone - in which she was still unwittingly fighting. Her quest is to find the Appleseed, the final code, which will allow the Bioroids to reproduce and maintain the same lifecycle as humans, and deliver it to the legitimate owner.

Although visually appealing the plot is somewhat complicated, it seems to unfurl, as they do in many of these films, in a scene of dialogue between two of the main characters. I'd advise a crash course in speed-reading for those watching the subtitled version. Miss this and you can pretty much give up hope of understanding what is going on. Not that you'll be bored as there is plenty to see. Overall this wasn't a bad way to kill an hour and a half.
